Pinny Grylls BFE is an award-winning independent filmmaker with 15 years of experience of self shooting, editing and directing documentaries. Her debut short documentary Peter and Ben won multiple awards at festivals, including Aspen, IDFA, LSFF, and SXSW. Pinny’s special interest in theatre and performance led to directing films for Channel 4 (First Cut, 3 Minute Wonders), BBC (Arts), The National Theatre and The Royal Opera House. Most recently she co-directed Grand Theft Hamlet about the first staging of Hamlet inside Grand Theft Auto. She has also contributed to other filmmakers work including The Street (Amazon) by Zed Nelson, Listen To Britain (BBC) By Ruth Grimberg and Super Nature by Ed Sayers (BFI Doc).

Fiction

Pinny is Writing and Directing her first feature film Signs of Life after received development support from The Uncertain Kingdom Scheme. It is a romantic comedy. This feature film tells story of Cleo - a failed stand up comedian who loses her hearing, learns Sign Language and finds love and community after joining a Deaf Cabaret.

With support from the BFI Development Fund she is also developing Hear My Voice a coming-of-age musical about TJ a 12-year old boy from Hackney who dreams of becoming an opera singer while trying to rekindle a relationship with his larger the life father Ron who is rapidly losing his hearing.

 
 

Commercials

Pinny has directed commercials for a number of brands including Aldi, Dove and British Gas. She is known for her strong short form storytelling, authenticity and humour.
